A couple sued an obstetrician at a hospital for improperly delivering their baby 14 months ago. The baby’s shoulders were too large to go through the birth canal; the doctor improperly pulled on the baby’s head and the nerves in the neck were stretched. As a result of the delivery, the young woman suffers from Erb’s palsy, a paralysis of the nerves in the upper body. Fried argued that this doctor should have used special maneuvers without applying excessive traction to the head.
