According to an article posted on NJ.com, a New Jersey man died at the Amazon facility in Avendale, New Jersey after he was caught between some equipment. Reports indicate that the 57-year-old man was a temporary worker at the job site where the fatal accident occurred.
The deceased worker had not previously worked at the facility for a long period of time, and had been placed there by a temporary staffing firm.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), 12 percent of all workplace deaths each year are suffered by temporary workers. These workers are at a higher risk because they perform some dangerous tasks, but do not have the training or safety gear with which permanent workers are provided. Many deaths suffered by temporary workers happen in the first few weeks on the job, according to OSHA. Recently, the non-profit organization ProPublica found that temporary workers had a 36 to 72 percent higher rate of injury than regular workers.
