A recall report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has revealed that Lea Industries has issued a recall for 59,000 children’s beds in the United States and 4,200 in Canada. The beds have side mattress support rails that can break and result in a child falling.
The support rails connect the headboard to the footboard, and further, support the mattress slats on which the mattress rests. If the rails break, the support beneath the mattress could collapse, injuring the child lying on it. Additionally, more hazards are present for bunk beds, as anyone on the mattress below can be seriously injured when the mattress support above collapses.
In total, 34 different bed collections from Lea Industries are affected by the recall. This includes lofts, bunks, and panel styles in full, twin, and queen sizes, with models sold in various paint colors and wood finishes. Beds with date codes from August 2008 through March 2013 are included in the recall. The date code, rail item number, and purchase order number are found on a white label on the inside of the side rail. Bed collections included in the recall are:
